Is Yahoo Shutting Down Del.icio.us? [Update: Yes]

For a couple of days now, we’ve been hearing rumors that the Yahoo layoff included the entire Delicious team.  Now Former Yahoo employee and Upcoming founder Andy Baio has tweeted out the above Yahoo! product team meeting slide that seems to show that Yahoo! is either closing or merging the social bookmarking service as well as Upcoming, Fire Eagle, MyBlogLog and others.

So, the only Yahoo property I actually care about and use is being shut down.

Yahoo Losing More Top Execs | Kara Swisher | BoomTown | AllThingsD

This entire mess–and that’s precisely what it is–calls into question the tenure of Bartz, a tough-talking, cost-cutting exec who was brought in to clean up Yahoo after the maelstrom around the failed takeover attempt by Microsoft several years ago.

She replaced co-founder Jerry Yang and came in with guns blazing and styling herself as an agent of change.

I think the question now is: how much longer Yahoo can survive?

Being “First” Versus Being “Best”

Specifically, what got me thinking about this notion was Yahoo’s response to Google Instant last week. In a post titled: “Back to the Future: Innovation is Alive in Search,” Yahoo passive-aggressively notes how they beat Google to the innovation of realtime search results. And as a bonus, they even throw in a few veiled hints that they could sue Google for copying their idea if they wanted to thanks to their “filed patent applications” and “first developed” “intellectual property.”

I couldn’t come up with a good angle at the time beyond simply writing two words:

Shut. Up.

Why it doesn't really matter who introduce a new technology first.

Reflecting on 3 years at Facebook

I’ll never forget my second day on the job when Chris Cox, our V.P. of Product, assigned me the task to fix a pretty complex bug in News Feed. I'd never written php in my life, but a few hours later when I got my code working and ready for review, he said "Cool, ship it!" with a big smile on his face. At first I didn't think he was serious, but once it shipped, I realized that I had just pushed out a change on my second day that 25 million people would experience instantly.

Facebook that clearly embraces hacker culture. That reminds me recent essay by Paul Graham:

Hacker culture often seems kind of irresponsible. That's why people proposing to destroy it use phrases like "adult supervision." That was the phrase they used at Yahoo. But there are worse things than seeming irresponsible. Losing, for example.

Yahoo and Nokia join forces in bid to challenge Google and Apple

"I don't want to hear any crap about something magical that the fine people of Yahoo are supposed to do in this short time, so fuck off," Bartz told Michael Arrington, editor of the influential blog TechCrunch, in front of an audience of technology gurus at the annual TechCrunch Disrupt gathering in New York.

In not totally unrelated news, Yahoo! will team up with Nokia.
