Nokia’s basic OS strategy is sound, it’s the execution that’s severely flawed. MeeGo will make a good high-end OS, Symbian will be relegated to the lower end, and Nokia will be back in the race.

Microsoft Kin is dead

We're learning this afternoon that Microsoft's Kin line, for all practical purposes, is riding off into the sunset just a few short weeks after its release. Sources close to Microsoft tell us that Andy Lees has rolled Kin into the Windows Phone 7 team and has canceled the existing product's launch later this year in Europe on news that sales weren't as strong as expected.

Microsoft: Designers, Designers, Designers - Caleb Elston

They are dictating screen resolution, GPS, accelerometer, memory, CPU, even the number of physical buttons that can exist on a device. This level of control allows for manicured apps that will run well on every Windows Phone. This is critical. Android has struggled with this.

The big but maybe sometimes overlooked aspect of iPhone (or more generally: Apple's design) is that it improved awareness and respect for user experience among the competitors. And wider spread of good design benefits all of us.
