Clubbed to death: Berlin steps in to save nightlife from gentrification

In the spruced-up district of Prenzlauer Berg that has become the epitome of gentrification, the famous Knaack club closed its doors last year after almost six decades when residents complained about noise.

There's something very refreshing abount knowing that for once I am a part of a problem.

Founders STAND UP! The anti-copycat revolution starts now | 6Wunderkinder

Luckily people in Berlin are beginning to realize the importance of community. Two American entrepreneurs, Schuyler Deerman and Travis Todd, have started making changes  - with movements such as Silicon Allee. Slowly, individuals are building an inspirational setting for us all, and guess what? We’ve now got the startups to boot.

On Berlin startup scene from the inside. What I'm not getting, though, is the European need to emulate US by using silly names. Why can't we just do our own thing without calling ourselves Silicon Allee or, let me make that one up, Krzemowe Podkarpacie? Oh, excuse me, it sounds more respectable in English: Silicon Carpathian Mountains Foothills.

Betraying Berlin

The city that has been stuffed full of subsidies, like a wrestler on steroids, is of course going to find it difficult to move or think straight, is going to confuse size with strength. And of course its political class is going to be more adept at spending state money than saving it, more likely to cater to its clients than puzzle out what is best for the city. And we all let that happen.

How To Live In Berlin

Start partying as it gets warmer. Get to the club at 3am and don’t leave until midday the following day. Wonder how you’ll ever keep up with this sort of party lifestyle. Go to Berghain at least once. Get a bar job in an illegal club and start going to underground parties where the walls sweat and people like Dan Deacon play for free. Start to genuinely love electro music.

All the possible stereotypes about life in Berlin in one place. The comments section is where it gets interesting.

WITN: London Is Gonna Be Pissed, But We Prefer Berlin for Startups (TCTV)

Ecosystem-wise, Berlin has some things going for it that most Western European capitals lack. For starters, it’s cheap to work and live there. Culturally and historically, Berlin is a more natural gateway between Europe’s mature Western economies and the surging talent in Eastern Europe. And Berlin has a surging creative class, largely made up of transplants. It’s become the place where misfits in Europe– people who want to be artists and creators, people who don’t fit in rigid social structures of cities like London– flock to do what they want.

Berlin already is a home to several startups and I'm sure it has all it takes to attract many more.

Berlin police mount huge operation to evict tenants of former squat

"People with not much money are being forced out of Berlin city centre. This is not just about 25 people losing their home, it's a protest against the gentrification of the city and ordinary people all over being priced out of their local housing market."

Sarah refused to say how much rent she paid, but it is widely believed to be a token amount. German media has reported that the rent is still set at 1992 levels, which equates to just €1 (85p) per square metre per month.

Protests in Berlin in defense of the holy right to a free flat in the city center.

Blogger disses Berlin Hipsters

I bet one day, the Chinese will build a small version of Berlin outside of Hangzhou, just like they did with Paris. It will have an "infamous" techno club, a few alternative bars, angry bikers on their way to their unpaid internships, and nobody will be able to tell the difference to the original fake.

Apple iPad offers “freedom from porn” – but not in Berlin

Billboards announcing the arrival of the iPad on Friday have been going up all over Berlin, but one of them in the subway station of Rosenthaler Platz is quite different to the rest. As you can see from the images below, the iPad appears to be about to offer an entirely new experience of porn.

After living here for few months I'm not surprised.
