Permissions For Web Applications

Traditionally Web applications are untrusted, treated as potentially malicious, and hence "sandboxed" to deny them the ability to affect the user's system or access user data. As we add capabilities to the Web platform, we sometimes encounter situations where legitimate applications want functionality that must be denied to malicious applications. A natural solution is to ask the user whether such requests should be permitted.

Robert O'Callahan of Mozilla compares usability of permission model of Android and web browsers.

Google kicks GrooveShark out of the Android Market

The controversial GrooveShark music streaming service is getting the cold shoulder from mobile platform vendors. GrooveShark's mobile music streaming application, which was kicked out of Apple's App Store last year, has recently received the same treatment from Google.

I still don't get how Grooveshark can be accepted by record companies, when it gives so much away for free. So this news is not really shocking.

MLB.com CEO Bob Bowman says iOS users are more likely to purchase content than Android owners

The iPhone and iPad user is interested in buying content–that’s one of the reasons they bought the device. The Android buyer is different. It’s a great phone–make no mistake about it. But if you really want first rate digital content on a device, your first look will probably be an iPhone. And on the tablet, an iPad.

Clearly, market size itself is not the only factor when picking up a platform to develop for.

The Walled Garden Has Won

Ten years ago people were horrified at the notion of Intel adding a unique ID to all of its processors. Today every phone has a unique ID, and yours is probably uploaded to apps’ servers multiple times a day. Not so long ago, people were outraged that Amazon could and did arbitrarily delete books from users’ Kindles; last week they clamored for Google to exercise essentially the same power.

On attempts to seize control over users, that were previously unthinkable. Also, why Android platform is much more away from openness than some of us would like to think.

Mobile Flash Fail: Weak Android Player Proves Jobs Right

After spending time playing with Flash Player 10.1 on the new Droid 2, the first Android 2.2 phone to come with the player pre-installed, I’m sad to admit that Steve Jobs was right. Adobe’s offering seems like it’s too little, too late.

Review of Flash plugin for Android. Devastating review.

An Android User’s Take On Yesterday’s iPhone News

What’s more, I’ll be surprised if Android devices don’t surpass the iPhone’s hardware capabilities within the next four months or so.

New iPhone is not awesome enough to bring Google to its knees and in some areas Android is clearly a leader. Still, the new Retina display seems to be gorgeous.

Sayonara, iPhone: Why I'm Switching to Android - Newsweek.com

And unlike other Apple rivals, like Adobe, Google execs weren't huffing and puffing and wringing their hands about Apple's bad behavior. No, instead, Google was mocking Apple. Making fun of it. Laughing at it.

Daniel Lyons, of Fake Steve Jobs fame, predicts Jobs' doom. Yawn.
